While its opening has been pushed back a little, dirt work has started at the site of the new Meddys restaurant in downtown Wichita.
Businessman Alex Harb — who also owns Ribbit Computers — tells the WBJ that his planned new eatery near Douglas and Washington is on target to open in September.
Originally, a mid-summer opening was planned for the Mediterranean eatery, though, as often happens with new construction, plans changed.
“We looked for a place downtown for a long time before we settled on a spot right across the street from Ribbit,” Harb says. “It’s exciting. We’re really looking forward to the opening.”
The restaurant will go up just to the south of the Swope Lofts apartment building at the southeast corner of Douglas and Washington. The site had previously been a car lot.
Late last month, Wichita-based Ink Construction pulled a building permit for a $700,000 new restaurant build-out at the site, according to city records. The downtown site will be Harb’s third Meddys location, along with two east-side restaurants.
“There’s a lot in the works downtown right now,” Harb says. “There’s a lot of energy here. People say that has a lot to do with the millennials who are living down here, but I think it’s everybody. It’s not just the millennials. There’s more life downtown overall.”
